چکیده

e-mail: [email protected] October 15, 2008 Abstract We report on a new type of magnetic lens that focuses atomic clouds using a static inhomogeneous magnetic field in combination with a radio-frequency field (rf). The experimental study is performed with a cloud of cold cesium atoms. The rf field adiabatically deforms the magnetic potential of a coil and therefore changes its focusing properties. The focal length can be tuned precisely by changing the rf frequency value. Depending on the rf antenna position relative to the DC magnetic profile, the focal length of the atomic lens can be either decreased or increased by the rf field.

Single-impulse magnetic focusing of launched cold atoms

We have theoretically investigated the focusing of a launched cloud of cold atoms. Time-dependent spatially-varying magnetic fields are used to impart impulses leading to a three-dimensional focus of the launched cloud. We discuss possible coil arrangements for a new focusing regime: isotropic 3D focusing of atoms with a single magnetic lens. We investigate focusing aberrations and find that, f...

Transport of launched cold atoms with a laser guide and pulsed magnetic fields

We propose the novel combination of a laser guide and magnetic lens to transport a cold atomic cloud. We have modelled the loading and guiding of a launched cloud of cold atoms with the optical dipole force. We discuss the optimum strategy for loading typically 30 % of the atoms from a MOT and guiding them vertically through 22 cm. However, although the atoms are tightly confined transversely, ...

Experimental Single-Impulse Magnetic Focusing of Launched Cold Atoms

Three-dimensional magnetic focusing of cold atoms with a single magnetic impulse has been observed for the first time. We load 7×10 Rb atoms into a magneto-optical trap, precool the atoms with optical molasses, then use moving molasses to launch them vertically through 20.5 cm to the apex of flight. In transit the atoms are optically pumped, prior to the single magnetic lens impulse that occurs...

Recent developments in trapping and manipulation of atoms with adiabatic potentials

A combination of static and oscillating magnetic fields can be used to ‘dress’ atoms with radiofrequency (RF), or microwave, radiation. The spatial variation of these fields can be used to create an enormous variety of traps for ultra-cold atoms and quantum gases. This article reviews the type and character of these adiabatic traps and the applications which include atom interferometry and the ...

Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition in RF Dressed Ultra-Cold Gases

Very low temperature dilute trapped atomic gases form a well known state, the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Recent work has made it possible to adiabatically transfer condensates from 3 dimensional traps into RF dressed traps that hold the atoms in a small region around a specific magnetic field. For a quadrupole magnetic trap, this results in an ”eggshell” potential, where atoms’ movement is...
